Lecce old town is aBaroquemarvel and a lively centre, full of the hustle and bustle of locals walking about their business. It's a lively university town provided with refined boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and bars. You too can explore the roads and passageways and take in the unexpected and rich views around almost every corner. The stone used here in Lecce, pietra leccese, is a golden-yellow limestonewhich never fails to do whatt is was designed to do in the 17th and 18th centuries: create a show, an outrageous feast for the eyes. This pliable stone sumptuously decorates the noblepalazziresidences and at the times over-the-top ornate facades of the churches. There are also some other surprises like the important remains of Lecce's gloriousRoman heritage.
Both the AdriaticandIonian Seasare within easy access. Lecce is a great base from which you can go to the local beaches and explore theSalentoPeninsula. It is a perfect place for a relaxing walk and its restaurants offer delicious food typical ofPuglia. You can't miss the workshops of traditional handicrafts, especially the art of "cartapesta" paper maché, and other local craft industries blending in with smells and tastes of the local specialties.
